Bent Axle

Vehicle Information:

2007 Chevrolet Silverado

In this example you are looking at a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado (with a lift kit) that was hit hard in the DS side rear wheel. The aluminum wheel exploded on impact, so a spare wheel and tire was mounted. As you can see in the left image the axle moved to the right by 15mm and was pushed back by 43mm.

The most important question is whether or not the axle is bent due to the impact? The toe of the rear axle was checked, on their alignment system, to determine if there was damage. Unfortunately, their alignment system could not measure the axle due to the severe shift. This problem was easily solved with the Wand. We marked the wheels at 3 o'clock and nine o'clock and imaged both wheels. The Wand, as if looking through the wheel, quickly determined in 10 minutes that the total toe was 5mm positive. At this point in the discovery process we knew the axle must be replaced.

The Wand also measures used axles to avoid installing a bent axle.
